CONTEST! YOU CAN WIN STUFF!

Brewster McCloud

Brewster McCloud (1970), directed by Robert Altman. It’s one of my favorite films and it’s SUPER hard to find. It’s never been released on DVD, which is a crying shame. It’s so wacky and fun and unique. I can honestly say I’ve never seen another movie quite like it (and I have seen a lot of movies). It’s about a strange boy who lives in a fallout shelter beneath the Houston Astrodome, trying to build wings that will allow him to fly.

Anyways, you may remember the little contest I held last summer, asking people to draw a picture of themselves at age 100. It was a LOT of fun for me, seeing all the terrific illustrations that people shared. I’ve wanted to do another little contest for a while now, so I’M GONNA!

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:

  1. Draw a scene from your favorite movie! Or any movie you feel like drawing a scene from! The only rule here: HAVE FUN WITH IT.
  2. Once you’ve got your drawing done, post it here on my blog in the comments of this very post. If you’re bashful, you can email it to me BUT I’M TOTALLY GONNA POST IT HERE FOR EVERYONE TO GAWK AT IF YOU ARE PICKED AS A WINNER.
  3. Finally, I’m asking everyone to do me a small favor and post a link back to my website and/or blog somewhere on the internet. You can do this on your blog or website, twitter, facebook, tumblr, a message board, etc. When you post or email your drawing, show me where you linked back to me! This is very important! It might help you WIN STUFF!

HOW DO I WIN?: This time there will be TWO big winners. One of the winners will be selected by me. It might be the drawing that makes me laugh the most, or maybe the one I think looks nicest or most interesting. Basically whichever drawing I think deserves to win. The other big winner will be randomly selected from a hat! In order to get your name in the hat, you MUST complete STEP THREE (linking back to me somewhere on the net and showing it to me).

If the drawings people share this time around are even a fraction as delightful as the ones from last year’s contest, there is a very good chance I’ll pick a few honorable mentions.

THE PRIZE: The two big winners will recieve a package in the mail filled with as much stuff as I can fit into it, including (but not limited to) some original art, loads of mini comics, and a t-shirt designed and screen-printed by yours truly! Plus any other goodies that I can scrounge up.

DEADLINE: TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2010 (that gives you TWO whole weeks!)

Please, spread the word! If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask!

I assume we can only enter one illustration? I have too many ideas and I think most of the time I spend will be spent choosing ONE.

  2. 2 Phil

origamibunny - Draw as many as you’d like! You can only win once though!

  3. 3 origamibunny

Ok, here’s the first of a few: http://fav.me/d2ljfsz

I would post them all at once when I finish them all but I can guarantee I’d forget some.

My scene is from the original “Bedazzled,” with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook. Peter (the devil) is doing some errands (giving parking tickets), and stops to show Dudley what happened when he was ejected from heaven. In this hypothetical, Peter climbs atop a post box to pretend to be God, and Dudley, being Lucifer, has to dance around and praise him constantly. It gets old very quickly.

I love this scene so much. I love the strange natural morality presented, and Peter’s fabulous red socks!

Fun contest, Phil! I’ll post this to my journal in a bit, with a link to this post.

My favorite movie is Tommy Boy and while there are so many favorite scenes (like, all of them), I think this moment is the most visually stunning. Or at least, it LEADS to the most visually stunning scene where the once-thought-dead buck destroys Richard’s car from the inside out.

This is from The Color Purple, when Celie starts to get in touch with her self worth. This movie never loses it’s appeal to me…

I drew the final scene in Dune, when Alia kills Baron Harkonnen. “For he IS the Kwisatz Haderach!” Mountains of radness.

The fact that I chose this scene makes me feel a little bit like a lady who tapes Cathy cartoons to her cubicle, but…
I picked the scene in “Pillow Talk” where Rock Hudson carries Doris Day through the streets of New York, with her bedsheets and all.
My drawing (and some screenshots!) can be seen here:

This was done for an APA jam comic about five years ago but has never seen the light of day outside the APA membership. It’s from a Tex Avery cartoon I can’t recall the name of, but it still cracks me up.
