ADVENTURE TIME

My buddy Pen has a new show coming out on Cartoon Network REALLY SOON. It’s going to be amazing. My good friend Natasha works on the show too. Pen and Natasha and tons of other people have been working really, really hard on Adventure Time for a long time! I’ve never been more pumped for a tv show in my life! I don’t have cable (or even a tv), so I’m going to have to bike over to a friend’s house to watch it every week.

I actually was given the chance to test for a storyboarding job on the show last year. Things didn’t quite work out with the job, but it was a lot of fun and it was really exciting just to be given the opportunity! Here’s a picture of my storyboard drawings all over my living room floor.

look at me go!

I’ve been digging around on my computer and finding all kinds of old comics and drawings from years ago. Tons of stuff from when I was in college. It’s strange, seeing all these things!

growing

At one point, when I was still in school, I was asked to contribute a bunch of comics to Too Much Coffee Man Magazine. I drew a bunch of strips and sent them in but they unfortunately stopped putting out new issues before any of my comics ever saw print.

land/boat

It was an awesome little magazine, I remember seeing comics by guys like Craig Thompson, Jhonen Vasquez, Jeffrey Brown, Peter Kuper, Bill Plympton, etc. I still have a few issues laying around somewhere. So I was sad to see it go, both as a fan and as a guy who missed the boat on getting some work published.

The Contest Winners!

First and most important thing: THANK YOU! Thanks so much! Thanks to everyone that drew something for the contest! And thanks to everyone that linked to the contest!

This was a really tough contest to judge. There were some fantastic entries, all of them very different. I had such a hard time, in fact, that I decided there would not be two winners, but THREE! Gasp! I picked two winners myself just based on which ones I liked the best and then drew one from a hat.

BIG WINNER NUMBER ONE: Pink Flamingos by Vicki Nerino

One of my two favorites came from my good friend, Vicki Nerino. I’m an enormous fan of her work and this drawing is no exception! I have seen Pink Flamingos (Vicki actually made me watch it a while back), and I’m not at all shocked she picked this scene to illustrate, knowing her personally. Anyways, I love this drawing. I am pretty certain Vicki already has copies of all my mini comics, tons of my original drawings, and even one of the shirts I screen printed. I have no idea what I’ll put in her prize package that she doesn’t already have! This is part of the reason I felt it would be okay to pick an additional big winner (aside from there being so many phenomenal drawings). Someone should get all these prizes!

BIG WINNER NUMBER TWO: The Third Man by Dustin Harbin

Dustin managed to get this BEAUTIFUL drawing done just before the deadline. And jeez, I am so glad he did! I haven’t seen The Third Man, but I did have it on my (ridiculously long) Netflix queue. It was number 348 on the list. Dustin’s drawing has prompted me to bump it up to number 3. Not only does this make me want to see The Third Man, this drawing makes me want to see Dustin draw a big long spooky mystery comic. Do it, Dustin!

BIG WINNER NUMBER THREE: Dune by Julia Gfrörer

Julia’s entry was picked out of the hat, but it was honestly one of the handful of drawings that I was very seriously considering as a winner anyways. I’ve spent some time snooping around Julia’s website and flickr stream since I first saw her entry. Lots of good stuff! Anyways, I have seen Dune. I actually just recently finished reading the book for the first time as well. I love Dune. I love Julia’s drawing. I’m glad she get’s to be one of the winners!

Thanks again to everyone that drew something! It was a lot of fun for me, I hope it was a lot of fun for you. Winners, I’ll be sending emails your way soon to get your mailing addresses. I’m sure I’ll do another contest at some point in the future. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch a movie.

Today is the last day to get contest entries in! The contest ends at midnight tonight (West coast time, even though I’m on the East coast).

Also, I’ll have a new illustration up over at Picture Book Report on Thursday (small peek at the illustration up above). In the meantime, take a peek at the super amazing work everyone else has been sharing.

A little peek at what I’ve been working on the last few days.

More contest entries have started coming in! Exciting! You’ve got until the 23rd to draw a scene from your favorite movie!

just one week left to get contest entries in!

sunny drawing room
It sure feels like spring in this sunny little drawing room of mine! Here’s a picture I took as I was working on that Brewster McCloud illustration I posted a week ago.

And here’s a scan of my messed up first attempt at inking the illustration. The piece of paper has since become a paint testing surface. What an interesting mess it’s become!

Just one week left to get your contest entries in! Please spread the word!

The Man Who Does Not Age, He Just Keeps Getting Taller

Just a little doodle from earlier this week. I hope you’re all drawing something for the big contest I’m holding! And I’m still taking on commissions!

CONTEST! YOU CAN WIN STUFF!

Brewster McCloud

Brewster McCloud (1970), directed by Robert Altman. It’s one of my favorite films and it’s SUPER hard to find. It’s never been released on DVD, which is a crying shame. It’s so wacky and fun and unique. I can honestly say I’ve never seen another movie quite like it (and I have seen a lot of movies). It’s about a strange boy who lives in a fallout shelter beneath the Houston Astrodome, trying to build wings that will allow him to fly.

Anyways, you may remember the little contest I held last summer, asking people to draw a picture of themselves at age 100. It was a LOT of fun for me, seeing all the terrific illustrations that people shared. I’ve wanted to do another little contest for a while now, so I’M GONNA!

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:

  1. Draw a scene from your favorite movie! Or any movie you feel like drawing a scene from! The only rule here: HAVE FUN WITH IT.
  2. Once you’ve got your drawing done, post it here on my blog in the comments of this very post. If you’re bashful, you can email it to me BUT I’M TOTALLY GONNA POST IT HERE FOR EVERYONE TO GAWK AT IF YOU ARE PICKED AS A WINNER.
  3. Finally, I’m asking everyone to do me a small favor and post a link back to my website and/or blog somewhere on the internet. You can do this on your blog or website, twitter, facebook, tumblr, a message board, etc. When you post or email your drawing, show me where you linked back to me! This is very important! It might help you WIN STUFF!

HOW DO I WIN?: This time there will be TWO big winners. One of the winners will be selected by me. It might be the drawing that makes me laugh the most, or maybe the one I think looks nicest or most interesting. Basically whichever drawing I think deserves to win. The other big winner will be randomly selected from a hat! In order to get your name in the hat, you MUST complete STEP THREE (linking back to me somewhere on the net and showing it to me).

If the drawings people share this time around are even a fraction as delightful as the ones from last year’s contest, there is a very good chance I’ll pick a few honorable mentions.

THE PRIZE: The two big winners will recieve a package in the mail filled with as much stuff as I can fit into it, including (but not limited to) some original art, loads of mini comics, and a t-shirt designed and screen-printed by yours truly! Plus any other goodies that I can scrounge up.

DEADLINE: TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2010 (that gives you TWO whole weeks!)

Please, spread the word! If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask!

READY SET GO!
