HELLO, my name is Phil McAndrew and I am an award-winning illustrator, a cartoonist, and a writer. I am the author of CRYING IN FRONT OF YOUR DOG AND OTHER STORIES (Uncivilized Books, 2013). I illustrated the CAVEBOY DAVE series of graphic novels written by Aaron Reynolds (Viking Books, 2016 and 2018), MONSTER SCIENCE by Helaine Becker (Kids Can Press, 2016), and YOUR MIND MAKES THOUGHTS LIKE YOUR BUTT MAKES FARTS by Todd Strauss-Schulson (Wisdom Publications, 2023). An art book collecting some of my work was published by Benign Kingdom in 2013. In 2014 I made a 24 page comic book that doubled as packaging for a split 7" record by the critically acclaimed punk bands Perfect Pussy and Joanna Gruesome. I've contributed comics and humor to The New Yorker, MAD Magazine, Ahoy Comics, Popula, AWRY, and The Nib. For a while I had my own television show in development with Cartoon Network and I've worked as a freelance character designer and concept artist for animated projects at other television networks. I've given talks and written articles about drawing and creativity and I currently teach illustration at Syracuse University. I've also taught classes and workshops to kids, teens, and professional illustrators and designers. I directed a music video. I have a BFA in illustration and drawing from Daemen College. I sometimes play in bands with my friends, most recently with The Nudes. I grew up in Syracuse, NY and have spent time living in San Diego, CA and Ithaca, NY. I currently live in the Buffalo, NY area with my cat, a few dozen house plants, and thousands of books.
